this is how you know you’re an apple fan: appleinsider’s pictures of covered banners at moscone center make you desperately hunger for to recall what’s on them.

Five 60-foot banners grace the South hall, while Apple’s booth on the expo floor has massive banners hanging from the ceiling, hidden behind black cloth.

AppleInsider also has pictures of the mobile production studio that will handle Tuesday’s keynote presentation. Inside, you can see engineers setting up camera angles and making finishing touches for Phil Schiller’s talk.

The keynote presentation begins Tuesday, January 6 at 9 a.m. Pacific Time (noon Eastern), but TUAW’s coverage will begin early that morning. If you’re interested in drinking from the firehose of Macworld news from the show floor, feel free to follow Twitter user @tuaw_mwsf09. (Otherwise, our regular Twitter stream, @tuaw, will remain at a moderate volume.)

TUAWShrouded Macworld banners ready for Tuesday originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 03 Jan 2009 19:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Our top albums and top tracks of 2008…

Quite simply, the best albums and the best tracks of the year?

Our Top 40 tracks of 2008 were arrived at by a combination of reader votes and editorial opinion. Every one of the hundreds of nominations was counted, considered and either approved or rejected (yes, we caught a few sneaky bands trying to nominate their own songs!).

The below is just a list of these best songs. You can see the full top 40 with comments and video clips HERE.

Our albums of the year were reached after much argument in the Clash office. Our high-tech system ? Post-It notes stuck all over one wall of our London HQ ? soon sorted the wheat from the chaff, as records favoured by only one of many scribes were sidelined by those attracting numerous votes. Read interviews with selected acts and commentary on all entries in the current issue of Clash magazine (issue 33, Kanye West cover).

The shootist

You’ll notice a degree of crossover ? could it be that these acts are, in a way, the best of 2008?

Could be, could be?

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz announced the company’s suggested holiday reading list, via the FastLane blog, and I’ll have to admit that while I found it fairly unusual for a car company (not an honorific title, yet) to issue reading recommendations, I found the idea quaint and refreshing.

I was quite eager to see what GM might come up with, since I’ve got a little extra time on my hands during the holidays, and I’m always looking for a good book. My first thought was that GM would suggest some escapist fiction - Ray Bradbury, for instance. But Something Wicked This Way Comes probably sounds a little daunting in these times. GM, understandably, does not wish to frighten any more people away.

From Nate Silver at 538

If you’re a person of means, then get out there and splurge a little bit, preferably on American-made goods or services. Stuff’s cheap right now! . . . after a decade or so of spending outside their means, Americans seem almost to feel guilty right now about spending money. This is exactly the opposite of what the economy needs. The structural problems of the financial sector are liable to take a long time to untangle, but if consumers signal that they’ve weathered the storm and are prepared to start consuming again, then jobs and investment capital will follow.

And from John Robb

If you and your family aren’t circling the financial wagons right now, cutting to the extent possible your exposure to global financial undertow (which is reaching tidal wave proportions), then you are either naive or an idiot.

Whose advice do you want to follow?

Personally, I’m clearly in the “batten down the hatches” camp, but I have to acknowledge that what Nate is saying is true. If we all stop spending, the recession will get much worse and last much longer, and ultimately affect a lot more of us. Still, it isn’t something you want to bet wrong on, and so as with many things, it is the uncertainty that is the killer.

I wanna love you forever lyrics

But just how uncertain are things? Fester provided some anecdotes regarding holiday shopping last week, and I came across this in a comment thread earlier today:

Foot traffic at Rideau center is 40% lower than last year. Friend of mine was there on Sat, the last Sat before xmas, and it was like a desert.

I stood in no lineups while shopping at St-Laurent Mall on Sat night.

No lineups at the post office on Sun, either!

And of the non-anecdote variety are these kinds of stories:

UP to 15 national retail chains are predicted to go bust before the middle of January, forcing thousands more shopworkers onto the dole.

The prediction came from insolvency expert Begbies Traynor as well-known retail chains clamour to sell enough goods to meet their quarterly rent payments on Christmas Day. Nick Hood, partner at Begbies Traynor … refused to name specific store groups, but this weekend it emerged that The Officers Club, a 150-strong national menswear chain, had been put up for distressed sale through KPMG, while the specialist tea retailer, Whittards, and music store Zavvi remained on the critical list.

And Calculated Risk notes that commercial real estate loan defaults are about to go way up. Add in stories like Chrysler shutting down all of its plants for a month, a diamond mine shutting down for ten weeks, and all sorts of employers cutting back on employee’s time and bonuses, and it is hard to see any sign that this recession is going to be a short one.

According to Joe Christensen and La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins have expressed interest in Japanese pitchers Kenshin Kawakami and Koji Uehara. The authors suggest Kawakami could allow the Twins to trade a starter, while Uehara may enter the Majors as a reliever. The Twins’ interest in Kawakami first surfaced back on Tuesday. Teams such as the Orioles, Cardinals, Braves, Red Sox, Mets, and Giants have also been linked to him.

Another note from Christensen: the Twins have expressed interest in Brett Tomko.
